COFFEE TRIVIA
Lynn's Paradise Caf, Louisville, Kentucky, has a big coffee pot in front of their restaurant. While it doesn't tower over the interstate, the 8-ft. tall, bright red pot is at ground level and features a companion coffee cup, so it's an easy photo op. The pot, built by the Cafe staff in 1994, operates as a fountain, pouring tap temperature water into the cup.

(Lynn's Paradise Caf, 984 Barret Avenue, Louisville, Kentucky, East of I-65, northwest of Winter Ave. 502-583-EGGS, Cafe open daily.)

BOOK SIGNING
Local author Cynthia S. Bercowetz will discuss her book, "Don't Get Ripped Off! Get Help! Tell It to George" at the Beanery on Thursday, Sept. 1st from 11am to 1 pm. Copies will be available for sale and signature.

In her book, she reveals how the "little guy" can outsmart the con artists. Author Cynthia Bercowetz went to Detorit to battle the auto manufacturers when hundreds of readers complained about pain peeling off their cars. Her investigation uncovered inferior undercoating, leading to some much appreciated free paint jobs for consumers.

Bercowetz is well-known in the Windsor area as her column, "Get Help! Tell It to George", has been published in the Journal Inquirer for more than 21 years.

She also will answer questions on identity theft and travel safety for American tourists traveling in foreign countries.

Bercowetz writes news articles for Broadcast Media Source, Washington D.C. and Google's news section. She has written news articles in London after the bombings when she was traveling on a cruise in July.

Her next book, "Unforgettable Recipes" plus savvy consumer tips from her first book will be released in December, 2005.

EXTRA BUCKS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The new owners of the Beanery Bistro are going a different route than most restaurant owners. They're bucking the trend of only "bottom line" thinking to purchase environmentally friendly products. Rather than buy styrofoam cups which don't biodegrade, they've chosen to buy all natural paper cups, at a price four times that of styrofoam.

"It may sound crazy to our accountant, but we are willing to spend a few extra bucks to make a difference in the quality of our environment," says owner Jane Garibay.

They also recycle all the plastic and glass beverage containers used in the restaurant by staff and customers, and are switching to all environmentally-friendly packaging goods like paper wrap, brown bags, etc instead of styrofoam take-out and catering containers.

The Beanery is continuing the environmental trend by becoming a member of the Plastic Loose Fill Council and become a drop off location for plastic loose fill, otherwise known as packing peanuts. Consumers all over the country can call 800-828-2214 to hear a list of local businesses that accept packing peanuts for reuse. Just drop them off at any of the companies listed and instead of being dumped in the landfill, the peanuts will be reused for packing and shipping. The hotline is a relief for many people who shop online and end up with lots of packing material and nothing to do with it.

The Beanery is also an exclusive vendor for a line of greeting cards called "QuotableCards." They chose these particular cards because not only do they feature fun and thought-provoking quotes, but they are also printed on recycled paper. "It just fits the way we want to run our business," says owner, Carol Engelmann.

They also plan to expand their line of Fair Trade teas and organic chocolates. One of the most popular candy items at The Beanery is a line of organic chocolate from the Endangered species Chocolate Company who donates 10% of the profits to endangered species recovery. Varieties include dark chocolate Bug Bites and Premium chocolate bars.

Coffee Trivia
Water Tower Coffee Pot
Stanton, Iowa

One of the few towns with a semi-legitimate coffee claim-to-fame, Stanton is the home of "Mrs. Olson." Or, at least, was the home of an actress -- stage name Virginia Christine -- made famous as Folgers' Mrs. Olson, hawking their "mountain grown" coffee in TV commercials and on the sides of coffee cans. She'd long since departed the Iowa, but returned for the town's Centennial celebration in 1970 as parade Grand Marshal. Stanton celebrated the connection, along with its own Scandinavian coffee roots, with a 120-ft. Coffee Pot Water Tower erected in 1971.

The "Swedish-style" pot, painted with decorative hearts and flowers, holds 40,000 gallons, on top of a 90-ft. tower, pot is 35-ft. high, 20-ft. wide, spout is 10-ft. high, 6-ft. deep, the handle is 15-ft. high. If you really care.

In 2000, a 96-ft. tall coffee cup water tower was erected to complement the coffee pot. Its capacity dwarfs the old pot, holding 150,000 gallons of water ready for percolation. It won the 2000 "Tank of the Year" award from the Steel Plate Manufacturer's Association
